There are seasons when life just feels heavy, and it’s hard to explain why. You’re doing what you know to do—showing up, trying to make better choices, working on the areas that need attention—but even with all that effort, something still feels off.

It can get frustrating when you feel like you’re putting in the work and not seeing real change. You fix one thing, and something else pops up. You deal with one issue, and it feels like another one is right behind it.

Sometimes the problem isn’t what’s right in front of you.

Think about it this way—if you see rats, your first instinct is to get rid of them. You set traps, clean things up, do whatever you can to make them go away. But if there’s still garbage nearby, the rats aren’t going anywhere for long. They may disappear for a little while, but they’ll be back.

That’s because the rats aren’t the real issue. The garbage is.

A lot of what we struggle with works the same way. The anger, the anxiety, the habits we wish we could break, the tension in our relationships—those are the things we notice first because they’re visible. They’re what interrupt our day and demand our attention. But many times, those things are being fed by something deeper that we haven’t really dealt with yet.

We spend so much time trying to manage what’s on the surface that we don’t always stop long enough to ask what’s underneath it.

That’s why things can feel like a cycle.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

What’s going on in your heart has a way of working its way into every part of your life—your reactions, your thoughts, your decisions, even the patterns you keep finding yourself in.

The good news is that God isn’t put off by any of it. He isn’t waiting for you to figure it out or clean it up before you come to Him.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” — Ephesians 2:10

Even in a season that feels messy or unclear, your purpose hasn’t changed.

“But you are a chosen people… God’s special possession…” — 1 Peter 2:9

You haven’t been overlooked or set aside.

And no matter how far you feel from where you want to be, this is still true:

“For God so loved the world…” — John 3:16

His love doesn’t shift based on how well you’re doing or how stuck you feel.

When life feels heavy, and you start to realize there may be more going on beneath the surface, you don’t have to ignore that or push it aside. You can bring it to God honestly.

Psalm 51 is a reminder that He doesn’t turn away a heart that’s willing to be real with Him. He restores what’s been broken and begins healing from the inside out.

When You’re Ready for Something Different

It may not be about trying harder or fixing one more outward behavior. It may be about letting God gently show you what’s underneath and trusting Him to meet you there.

That’s where real freedom begins—not just managing what shows up on the surface, but allowing God to do a deeper work that actually lasts.

The Bible is filled with broken people—liars, cowards, murderers, and failures. And yet, God never gave up on a single one. From Noah to Rahab, David to the shepherds in the field, God had a plan from the beginning: not to save us because we’re good—but because He is good.

In this powerful message, you’ll hear how Jesus came for the overlooked, the messy, and the ones who thought they were too far gone. And He came for you, too.

So maybe you’re feeling worn out this season. Maybe shame whispers that you’re too broken, too far gone, or too much of a mess. But the truth is this: before you took your first breath, God chose you (Ephesians 1:4–5). He wrapped Himself in humble cloth, not robes of royalty, to show you that no one is left out of His love—including you.

Let this be the Christmas season where you kick off your mat, leave your mess behind, and go tell the world: Jesus came, and He came for me.

You are loved.

You are chosen.

You are not too broken for God.

Denial is one of the most dangerous places to live, especially in recovery. It often sounds harmless — I’m fine. I’ve got this. I don’t need help. But denial keeps us stuck, pretending instead of healing.

In Scripture, we see this clearly. King David lived in personal denial until God sent Nathan to speak truth. The church of Laodicea lived in collective denial, convinced they were spiritually strong when Jesus said they were blind. Different situations, same problem. In both cases, truth was the turning point.

God doesn’t confront us to shame us. He confronts what He intends to restore. Sometimes the most loving thing God can do is hold up a mirror and help us see what we’ve been avoiding.

I know this personally. There was a season in my life when I kept saying I’m fine while everything was falling apart. I believed I could fix what I had no power to control. When denial finally broke, it was painful — but it was also the beginning of freedom. Healing couldn’t begin until honesty did.

That’s why Step One matters. You can’t move forward until you admit you’re powerless. Denial says, I’m okay. Truth says, You’re not — but you can be.

When denial breaks, freedom begins. We don’t just see our sin more clearly — we begin to see ourselves the way God sees us: forgiven, loved, and worth healing.

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

In this week’s Celebrate Recovery message, we open our hearts to every person watching—especially those who are incarcerated, those battling addiction, those praying for a loved one, and our CR Online family. You are family, and you are not alone.

This message wasn’t the one originally planned. It was born from a week full of heartbreak, disappointment, spiritual battles, and the kind of tears you cry alone in your car. But God used that moment of weakness to reveal something powerful:

Gratitude isn’t about feeling thankful.
Gratitude is about who God is—right in the middle of the mess.

Through the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16 and Paul’s powerful words on joy, suffering, and purpose, we’re reminded:

Joy isn’t rooted in circumstances — it’s rooted in Christ

Suffering doesn’t mean God has abandoned you — it means He is working

Your midnight worship might be the very thing that sets someone else free

Weakness isn’t failure — it’s the place where God’s strength shows up the most

Your testimony matters — don’t forget what God has already brought you through

We talk about addiction, family pain, rejection, spiritual heaviness, and the very real struggles that make gratitude feel impossible. And yet—Jesus meets us there. In the tears. In the chaos. In the heartbreak. In the weakness.

If you’re watching from a jail pod, recovery program, your living room, or your car…
If you’re carrying a burden no one else can see…
If you’ve forgotten what it feels like to hope…

This message is for you.

God is still good.
God is still faithful.
God is still working—even here, even now and you are loved.

Let’s choose gratitude not because life is easy,
but because Jesus is worthy.

“Rejoice in the Lord always.” — Philippians 4:4
“When I am weak, then I am strong.” — 2 Corinthians 12:10

Need Prayer?
Drop a comment or reach out privately. You are loved more than you know.

I’ve never battled substance abuse or addiction. So when I first stepped into the world of Celebrate Recovery, I honestly wondered if I even belonged. But what I’ve learned is that healing from rejection isn’t just for those overcoming addiction — it’s for all of us who have ever carried pain we didn’t fully process.

When our small group reached the Inventory chapter in the Celebrate Recovery workbook, I wanted to skip it. I told my leader I didn’t need to dig up old wounds — I had already forgiven the people who hurt me. I felt like I had moved on.

But she gently told me, “You can’t skip this, Katie. Inventory is a huge part of recovery.” And she was right.

Inventory is where you take an honest look at the people who hurt you, what they did, how it affected your life, and what damage it caused. It’s uncomfortable. It’s painful. And for me, it stirred up feelings I thought I had already dealt with.

I found myself writing words like:

Angry

Bitter

Alone

Inadequate

Insecure

Resentful

Abandoned

But when I asked God to help me go deeper, I realized that every one of those emotions pointed back to one root: rejection.

The Lie of Rejection

Rejection is one of Satan’s greatest tools. The enemy wants you to believe you’re unwanted, unaccepted, and unloved. And if he can get you to hold on to those lies, they’ll settle in your heart and start shaping your life.

But the truth? God’s Word says the exact opposite:

You are God’s handiwork (Ephesians 2:10)

You are chosen and dearly loved (Colossians 3:12)

You are accepted and not alone (Psalm 27:10)

You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession (1 Peter 2:9)

That’s not rejection — that’s identity.

Why We Need to Do the Hard Work

You can’t heal from what you won’t face. I didn’t want to relive the hurt, but I learned that ignoring it doesn’t bring healing — it just lets the wound stay infected under the surface. Inventory was like pulling out the last hidden splinters so real healing could begin.

And when you begin healing from rejection, you stop reacting from pain and start responding from purpose.

What Comes Next

The enemy will always try to feed you lies. But you get to choose whether or not to accept them.

Like a broken vending machine that spits the coin back out, we can learn to reject the rejection — not let it settle into our hearts, but instead replace it with God’s truth. And when truth fills our minds, our emotions heal, and our actions begin to change.

Maybe you’re reading this and realizing you’ve got your own “inventory” to do. I encourage you to grab a notebook, make the columns, and let God walk with you through it. Don’t do it alone — invite the Holy Spirit in.

You are not rejected. You are chosen. You are accepted. You are deeply loved.

Last night at 6:30, I suddenly realized—I needed a cross for the message I was giving the next day. Not a metaphorical one. A real, wooden cross to help bring the message home. So I looked around and asked, “Does anybody have a cross?” And without missing a beat, my daughter’s husband said, “I’ll build you one.”

And by the next morning, there it was. Built by hand, out of love, just in time.

That moment kind of sums up everything I’ve been learning lately—how God meets us exactly where we are, often through people we love, often in the last minute, and always in the most unexpected ways.

This week at Celebrate Recovery, I shared my heart in what I’m calling a “very real and raw testimony.” It wasn’t scripted. It wasn’t polished. I was honestly a little nervous—I even told the crowd, “We’re going to wing it.” But sometimes, that’s exactly where God shows up most powerfully.

If you’ve been watching online or joining us at Celebrate Recovery for a while, you know that we follow a rotation of 24 lessons based on the 12 steps and 8 principles. These lessons are life-changing, and when we walk through them with honesty, healing starts to happen.

But in between the teachings, there are moments like this one—where someone just shares their story. No perfect ending. No highlight reel. Just truth. Messy, real-life truth. That’s what I brought to the stage this time, and I pray it meets someone right in their own moment of mess.

If you’re reading this and you feel like your life is too broken, too far gone, too scattered to make sense—let me just tell you: it’s not. You’re not. God is in the business of redemption. And sometimes, all it takes is the courage to speak up, show up, and say, “Okay Lord, I’m willing.”

That’s what I did. And I believe He’ll do the rest.

Thanks for walking this road with me. You are loved, you are seen, and you are never alone.
Katie

When I first began my recovery journey, I assumed confession was just a private moment between me and God. I didn’t realize how much healing could come from also being honest and openly confessing our faults with myself—and with someone I trust. In this week’s message, I dive into Principle 4 of Celebrate Recovery: “Openly examine and confess our faults to ourselves, to God, and to someone we trust.”

This principle changed everything for me. It revealed how God, in His triune nature—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—provides the very relationships we need for deep and lasting healing. The Holy Spirit is our closest companion, living within us, comforting us, and reminding us of who we are in Christ. God the Father disciplines and corrects us with love, guiding us toward growth. And Jesus, our big brother, models how we are meant to walk with others, holding one another accountable in grace and truth.

In a broken world, we don’t always experience healthy relationships. But God gives us a spiritual family to walk with us. That’s why community is so important. We need people who reflect Christ—those who speak truth in love, challenge us when needed, and remind us of God’s promises.

If you’re walking through recovery and need help finding your next step, I invite you to explore the previous lessons from the Celebrate Recovery Steps. Whether it’s your first week or you’ve been on this journey for a while, there’s space to grow.

Confession isn’t about shame. It’s about freedom. When we openly confess, we begin to release the guilt and lies that keep us stuck. Healing comes when we invite the light in.

Let’s walk this path together—toward restoration, recovery, and the life God promises.

Let me start by saying this: giving your life to Jesus is the most important decision you will ever make. It’s the beginning of a new story, a new identity, and a new future. But there’s a second step that a lot of us miss—giving Him our will.

That’s what I want to talk about today.

In Lesson 5 of the Celebrate Recovery curriculum, we focus on Principle 3: “Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ’s care and control.”

Most of us understand what it means to give our lives to Jesus. That’s salvation. That’s eternity secured. That’s the moment you step out of darkness and into the light. But giving Him your will? That’s something entirely different.

Your will is your choices. Your actions. Your daily decisions. It’s what you do with your time, your attitude, your thoughts. And while your life belongs to Jesus the moment you say yes to Him, surrendering your will is how you begin to walk in abundant life—not just eternal life.

God created us in His image. He’s triune, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we’re triune too. We are spirit, soul, and body. When you’re saved, your spirit is sealed by the Holy Spirit. But your soul—your mind, your will, and your emotions—is where the battle takes place.

Galatians 5 reminds us that the Spirit and the flesh are in conflict. That means every day, we have a choice. Will we align our thoughts, feelings, and desires with our flesh… or with our spirit?

That’s where surrender comes in.

Giving God your will means renewing your mind through His Word. Romans 12:2 tells us not to conform to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. When you do that, you begin to think differently. You begin to walk differently. And before you even realize it, you start to bear fruit—the kind that only comes from the Holy Spirit.

Things like peace, patience, kindness, joy. Not because you’re trying harder. Not because you’re striving. But because you’re staying rooted in the Word, and that root produces fruit.

One of my favorite images is that of a fruit tree. That tree isn’t straining to produce apples. It just stays rooted and fed, and fruit grows naturally. The same is true for you. Stop trying so hard to change on your own. Instead, get rooted in the Word. Get fed by truth. Let God do the growing in you.

And here’s the part that blesses me most. Jesus says the meek will inherit the earth. Not just heaven—the earth. When we live surrendered, we experience joy, freedom, and purpose right now. That’s what it means to walk in abundance. That’s the reward of handing over your will.

So today, I want to ask you something personal.

Have you given God your will?
Are you still trying to control everything, or are you letting the Holy Spirit lead?

If you’ve never made the decision to give Jesus your life, start there. But if you have, and you’re ready for more—if you’re tired of doing it all your way—I invite you to take the next step.

Pray. Surrender. And let Him lead.

He loves you. He has good plans for you. And His way is always better.

Blessings,
Katie

A couple of years ago, I took my family on a trip to Costa Rica. We found this beautiful trail where you could supposedly see real sloths in the wild. I was so excited—I had never seen one before! So I gathered my kids and said, “Let’s take a walk.”

What started as a sweet idea quickly turned into chaos. One child ran ahead, another lagged behind, and another wandered completely off the path. The whining began—“I’m thirsty,” “I’m tired,” “Are we there yet?” Eventually, I gave in. We turned around and went back. We never saw a single sloth.

That missed moment stuck with me. Because isn’t that just like our walk with God?

He invites us on a journey. He says, “Come with Me. I have something beautiful to show you.” But like the Israelites standing at the edge of the Promised Land, we hesitate. We get distracted. We question His timing, His direction, and sometimes even His goodness.

I’ve done that too. When God first called me into ministry, I was terrified. I told myself I wasn’t qualified—that I was just a grasshopper among giants. I tried blogging, teaching, and creating videos, and when things didn’t take off, I wanted to quit.

These powerful “I am” declarations, rooted in scripture, will help you move from fear to faith—one promise at a time. Hang it up, pray through it, and remind your heart who you are in Christ.

But God, in His mercy, used every step—even the ones that felt like failures—to prepare me. And when He finally said, “It’s time to speak,” I was ready. Not because I was fearless, but because I had learned to trust the One walking with me.

If you’re struggling to take that next step because of fear, I get it. But don’t let fear steal what God has for you. Walk with Him. Trust His path. And know that He’s not asking you to be enough—He’s asking you to walk beside the One who is.

If you’re feeling discouraged right now, I hope you’ll read this reminder to Don’t Give Up. You are not alone.

Need help on your own recovery walk? Celebrate Recovery has been one of the biggest blessings in my life, and I truly believe in the healing God offers there. If mental health feels overwhelming, check out faith-based mental health resources from trusted organizations that walk this path too.

Have you ever felt like life just keeps hitting you over and over again? Maybe you’ve even realized… you’re the one holding the hammer.

That was me.

After my marriage fell apart, I tried everything to fix my broken heart—my way. I chased attention, numbed the pain, and stayed too busy to face what was really going on. But none of it helped. It only hurt more. I kept reaching for things I thought would make me feel better—relationships, distractions, even anger—but the pain always came back stronger.

It wasn’t until then that things started to change – that’s when I began finding healing through surrender

Celebrate Recovery lesson four is called Sanity—and I finally understood that doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result wasn’t just exhausting… it was insanity. I needed a new way. I needed Jesus.

Finding healing through surrender means giving up the illusion of control and trusting the One who can truly restore us. It means handing over the hammer and saying, “I can’t fix this—but I believe You can.”

Jesus is not just our Savior; He is our Advocate (1 John 2:1), our Friend (John 11), our Counselor (Isaiah 9:6), and our Healer. He doesn’t just tell us who He is—He reminds us who we are. Loved. Forgiven. Redeemed. Complete.

It takes courage to surrender. I didn’t do it perfectly, and maybe you won’t either. But the beautiful thing about Jesus is He doesn’t expect perfection—He just asks for your heart.

If you’re tired of being tired, maybe it’s time to stop fighting and start surrendering. Healing is possible. Freedom is real. And your story isn’t over yet.

Let go. Give Him the hammer.
And let the healing begin.

God bless,
Katie

Celebrate Recovery Lessons: Step 1| Step 2| Step 3
