Lord, Fill Me Up

Have you ever found yourself praying, “Lord, fill me with Your Spirit”? I know I have—many times. But over the years, I’ve learned something critical about that prayer: when our hearts are already filled with the things of this world, there simply isn’t room for the Holy Spirit to fully dwell within us.

Think about it—our lives are often cluttered with distractions, desires, and obligations that take up the space God is meant to fill. These can be good things, like work and family, or not-so-good things, like fear, anxiety, or the need for approval. Even blessings, when held too tightly, can leave us spiritually weighed down. And yet, the truth is simple: we have to be emptied before we can truly be filled.

This realization has led me to shift my prayer. Instead of only asking, “Lord, fill me with Your Spirit,” I now start by saying, “Lord, take away my desires for anything but You. Empty me of this world, strip away anything that doesn’t bring You glory, and make room in my heart for You to move.” It’s a bold prayer because it invites change, and change is rarely comfortable. But oh, how it’s worth it! When we release the things that tether us to this world, God replaces them with peace, joy, and a closeness to Him that we didn’t even realize we were missing.

I’m reminded of John 3:30: “He must become greater; I must become less.” This verse has become a cornerstone of my faith journey. It’s not about adding God to the life we’re already living—it’s about surrendering fully so He can transform us from the inside out.

On my blog, I often share stories of how God has used ordinary life experiences to teach me these extraordinary truths. Whether it’s through a tough season, a simple act of obedience, or the joy of seeing His promises fulfilled, I love reflecting on how God works in ways that are far beyond our understanding.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or distant from God, I encourage you to take a step back and ask: What am I holding onto that’s keeping me from Him? As we let go and make space for His Spirit, everything changes. Let Him fill you with His love, His purpose, and His incredible power.
