Fill Me Up, Lord
Have you ever prayed “Lord, fill me up?” There are moments in life when we feel spiritually empty and drained by the worries of this world, burdened by life’s struggles, or simply longing for something more.
God never intended for us to walk through life feeling depleted. He desires to fill us with His presence, power, and peace. But to be filled, we must first come before Him with open hearts, ready to receive.
What Does It Mean to Be Filled by God
Being filled by God isn’t about receiving temporary blessings or emotional highs. It is about experiencing His Holy Spirit working in and through us. When we ask the Lord to fill us, we are inviting His Spirit to transform our hearts, renew our minds, and guide our steps. This kind of filling is not a one-time event, but a daily surrender to God’s will.
I’m reminded of John 3:30: “He must become greater; I must become less.” This verse has become a cornerstone of my faith journey. It’s not about adding God to the life we’re already living—it’s about surrendering fully so He can transform us from the inside out.

Why Do We Feel Empty?
There are many reasons we may feel spiritually empty:
- Distractions of the World – We get caught up in busyness, entertainment, and social media, leaving little room for God.
- Unconfessed Sin – Sin separates us from God, creating a distance that makes us feel spiritually dry.
- Lack of Time in His Presence – If we neglect prayer, worship, and time in His Word, we miss the opportunity to be refilled.
- Trying to Do Everything Ourselves – Relying on our own strength instead of God’s will always lead to burnout.
The good news is that God longs to fill us again. No matter how empty you feel, He is ready to pour out His Spirit upon you.
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians reminds us of God’s desire to fill us with His Spirit. Read more about Paul’s powerful prayer here.
How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit
To be filled, we must first surrender anything taking up space in our hearts—fear, doubt, sin, or control. “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10). Next, we need to spend time in God’s presence through prayer and worship. “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8). If you want to grow deeper in understanding how the Holy Spirit moves, this article on the Holy Spirit is a great resource. We also need to ask for the Holy Spirit to fill us, trusting in God’s promise: “How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13). For more insight, check out this resource from Desiring God. Finally, we must live in obedience to His Word, allowing His Spirit to work through us. “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38).
