Can Seeking Acceptance Get You Killed??
That sounds like a harsh statement, but, yes, sometimes the pursuit of fitting in and acceptance can be a dangerous one. It was a dangerous one for Nate.
Nate’s desire to be accepted led to a drug and alcohol addiction that nearly killed him 6 times. His life was filled with ups and downs, and it seemed every time he thought he was figuring it out, he backslid. This is because his identity was based on how well he played sports and how many people called him friend. I sat down with him to hear his story. He came to know His true identity and a genuine acceptance that can only be found through Jesus Christ.
Does Scripture Talk About This?
Yes! The Bible has much to say on this topic. For example, Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Simply put, don’t try to fit into the world when those things lead you away from God. Instead, renew your mind to align with His.
Psalm 26:4-5 highlights the importance of who you surround yourself with. It says, “I do not sit with the deceitful, nor do I associate with hypocrites. I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked.” Basically what it’s saying here is that the Psalmist is very careful who they allow into their inner circle. He won’t stay in the presence of people who are up to no good.
It’s in human nature to want to fit in, but if fitting in leads you down scary paths, is it really worth it? Long term, is it going to add anything good to your life? This may be a moment where you need to stop and considered your community. Are they helping you on your journey? Are they encouraging sobriety and stirring clear of drugs? Or, are they waving temptations in your face?
If you are struggling to find healthy community, pray that the Lord will bring those people into your life. Here is a prompt to get you started:
Dear Lord,
I know that I am surrounded by people who are not helping me get better. I pray that you would teach me how to not seek their acceptance anymore. If I need to remove myself from these groups, give me the wisdom and strength to do so. I pray that you would work in their hearts to change and grow in the time we are apart. I also pray for Your community to fill my life!
In Jesus name I pray, Amen
