Shame can feel so heavy. Guilt is sneaky. It doesn’t just remind you of what you’ve done—it tries to redefine who you are. It whispers lies like “You’re too broken,” “You’ll never be enough,” or “If people really knew you, they’d walk away.”

But God’s Word tells a better story. A true one.

The truth is that you are not your past. You are not your mistakes. You are not what shame says about you. That said, in the middle of a battle with shame, it can be very difficult to remember that truth. Thankfully, God’s Word has a lot to say about this, and dwelling on these verses can help push back the heavy feelings of guilt and regret.

Here are 8 Bible verses that speak directly into the places where shame tries to settle. Let these verses break the silence and remind you who you really are in Christ.

1. Romans 8:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
→ Read that again, “no condemnation.” Shame may accuse, but Jesus has already cleared your name. Praise the Lord today for paying your debt!

2. Isaiah 54:4

“You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach…”
→ God’s redemption covers even your earliest wounds.

3. Psalm 34:5

“Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”
→ When your eyes are on Jesus, shame has no place. A beautiful thing happens when we move the focus off your past regrets and instead focusing more on the Lord to help shift your perspective.

4. 1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful…and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
→ You are not just forgiven—you are cleansed. Have you ever heard the old, classic hymn “There is a Fountain?” As it says, all the spots and blemishes from your past are indeed washed away.

5. Psalm 103:12

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
→ When God forgives you, He separates you from your shame—completely.

6. Isaiah 61:7

“Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance…”
→ God doesn’t just remove your shame—He replaces it with honor.

7. Micah 7:19

“You will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”
→ God buries your sin. Don’t go fishing. It is wonderful to realize that God isn’t holding on to your shame either.

8. 2 Corinthians 5:17

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
→ You are made new. Full stop. What does it mean to be a new creation in Christ? I go in to more detail about that here.

Ready to Carry These Verses With You?

We created a free printable card pack with all 8 verses—designed to remind you daily that shame doesn’t define you. Print them, pin them, or pass them to a friend who needs to know they’re still loved. Shame ends where grace begins. You are covered, known, and deeply loved.

Here at Katie Hauck Ministries, we talk a lot about finding healing, recovery, and freedom from addiction, trauma, or the consequences of poor choices. This is such an important part of our mission. At the same time, we recognize that addiction doesn’t just affect the individual who is struggling—it often deeply impacts the family and loved ones who care about them. If that’s you, take a deep breath; you are not alone. There are ways to navigate this with love, faith, and healthy boundaries.

1. Remember, They Made Their Own Choices

It’s easy to feel responsible for someone else’s choices. But the truth is, we can’t carry their burden. Galatians 6:5 says, “For each one should carry their own load.” You can love, encourage, and pray—but you can’t control their journey. Psalm 55:22 reminds us, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.”

2. Remember the Future Can Look Different

We often replay the past in our minds—the mistakes, the missed chances, the hurts. But God calls us to look ahead. Philippians 3:13–14 encourages us to “forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.” Focus on the present and the hope that’s still possible. Jeremiah 29:11 promises, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

3. Pray, Don’t Push

It’s natural to want to push someone to change, but real transformation comes from God. James 5:16 tells us, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Instead of pushing, pray—for protection, clarity, courage, and God’s timing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 reminds us, “Pray without ceasing.” Your prayers can move mountains where your words can’t.

A topic that is often brought up in regards to earnestly praying is fasting. If you are interested in learning more about how and why to fast, we have resources for that as well.

Learn About Prayer & fasting

4. Set Healthy Boundaries

Stepping back doesn’t mean giving up. Jesus often withdrew to pray and refresh Himself (Luke 5:16). Taking space allows you to maintain your peace, stay strong, and continue loving without burning out. Psalm 46:10 reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Trust that God is working, even when you can’t see it.

Boundaries aren’t walls—they’re loving protections for your heart and your family. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Healthy boundaries prevent enabling behaviors, give space for your loved one to take responsibility, and allow you to love without losing yourself.

Remember, you are not responsible for their choices—only for your faithfulness to God. Love, pray, and trust Him. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” When it’s not you, it’s them—but God is always with you, guiding, comforting, and strengthening your heart.

5. Don’t Carry It Alone

Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Family members often carry a heavy load, but that doesn’t mean it has to be carried alone. Connecting with a supportive community like a Bible-based local church and/or Celebrate Recovery can help you to not feel as alone on your journey.

There are also so many resources that can help. We have books, podcasts, videos, and more to help get you started. There are also so many other organizations that offer support. Don’t feel ashamed to spend time researching the options best for your family and situation. One thing to think about is whether the loved one who is struggling is at a point of accepting help yet. That will determine if the resources you need are for you to help navigate it better or for your loved one.

6. Stay Encouraged

As I mentioned at the beginning, you are not alone in this. The pain of watching someone you love struggle is much more common than you think. It is helpful to remember that it is worth it to persevere in hope, support, and prayer. Romans 1:12 reminds us to be “mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.” Hearing and reading true testimonies of how families impacted by addiction can really help you stay encouraged. That means the You Are Loved YouTube Series and the book From These Broken Pieces.

7. Continue Growing Your Own Faith

Whether you’ve never heard about Jesus before or are already a Christian, growing in your own faith will help build perspective in any situation, including in this specific one. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” The desire of our creator is for you to live an abundant life with peace and hope, no matter your circumstances.

Additional Practical Tips

Pray Daily – Set aside intentional prayer time for your loved one. (James 5:16)

Keep a Journal – Write down your prayers, thoughts, and reflections to release worry and see God’s work over time. (Psalm 37:5)

Maintain Healthy Boundaries – Decide what you can and cannot do for them, and stick to it. (Proverbs 4:23)

Take Care of yourself – Prioritize rest, nutrition, and spiritual health so you can stay strong for them. (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

Seek Support – Join a recovery ministry group, counseling, or prayer circle to share your journey. (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10)

Celebrate Small Wins – Notice and rejoice in any positive step your loved one takes, no matter how small. (Philippians 4:4)

You can love Jesus deeply and still feel stuck, and that experience is far more common than most people admit. Many believers discover that faith did not change everything the way they expected it to. You believed, you surrendered, and you asked God to work in your life, yet certain struggles, thought patterns, or emotional reactions never fully loosened their grip.

If that describes your experience, it does not mean your faith is weak or insincere. In most cases, it means no one ever explained what comes after salvation.

Being saved is real and powerful, but transformation is a process. Most of us were taught how to believe, but not how to walk out freedom in everyday life.

Why So Many Believers Feel Stuck After Salvation

For many Christians, the moment of salvation is clear and meaningful, but what follows is confusing. You may know what Scripture says and still feel trapped in familiar patterns. You may genuinely trust God and still find yourself reacting the same way you always have. Maybe you love Him deeply while quietly wondering why faith has not changed how you think, feel, or respond.

That disconnect creates frustration and shame, especially when you assume faith should have fixed this by now. However, that tension does not mean something is wrong with you. More often, it means certain beliefs have gone unexamined.

Scripture tells us that truth brings freedom, but freedom comes when truth replaces the lies we have unknowingly lived under for years.

Why Trying Harder Rarely Leads to Freedom

When freedom feels out of reach, most believers respond by increasing effort. They pray more, read more, serve more, and push themselves harder, hoping obedience will eventually override whatever feels broken inside.

But effort alone was never meant to produce freedom.

Jesus did not come to modify behavior. He came to transform the heart and renew the mind. When false beliefs go unchallenged, they quietly shape how we live, even when our intentions are sincere and our faith is genuine.

These lies often sound reasonable. They suggest that you should be further along, that God must be disappointed, or that this struggle defines who you are. Over time, those beliefs influence daily decisions, emotional responses, and spiritual confidence far more than truth ever has the opportunity to.

Why Freedom Is a Process and Not a Moment

Freedom takes time because healing goes deep. God does not rush us through transformation; He walks with us through it. Learning to live free requires unlearning what was never true in the first place.

Many believers were never discipled in how to renew their minds, confront false beliefs, or apply Scripture to real-life struggles. Without that guidance, faith can feel exhausting instead of life-giving, and obedience can feel heavy instead of hopeful.

Feeling stuck is not a sign of failure. Often, it is a sign that you are ready to understand something new and take a different step forward.

A Clear and Gentle Place to Begin

If you are starting to recognize that certain beliefs may be holding you back, there is no need to overhaul your life or commit to something overwhelming. Growth often begins with clarity and a manageable first step.

That is why I created Fight Back: 7 Lies That Keep You From Freedom, a short seven-day Bible plan designed to help you identify common lies that quietly limit spiritual growth and replace them with truth from Scripture. This plan is meant to feel calm, honest, and accessible, not heavy or condemning.

If you feel saved but still stuck, this is where I would walk with you first.

You can find the plan here: Fight Back: 7 Lies That Keep You From Freedom

If This Feels Close to Home

You are not behind in your faith, and you are not broken. Freedom is not about having everything figured out or doing everything right. It begins with honesty, understanding, and a willingness to let truth reshape what has been quietly shaping you.

One step is enough to start moving, and God is patient in the process. Salvation was just the start of His beautiful plan for your life.

That problem in your life that just won’t go away? It’s not a garbage problem, it’s a rat problem. let me explain.

There are seasons when life just feels heavy, and it’s hard to explain why. You’re doing what you know to do—showing up, trying to make better choices, working on the areas that need attention—but even with all that effort, something still feels off.

It can get frustrating when you feel like you’re putting in the work and not seeing real change. You fix one thing, and something else pops up. You deal with one issue, and it feels like another one is right behind it.

Sometimes the problem isn’t what’s right in front of you.

Think about it this way—if you see rats, your first instinct is to get rid of them. You set traps, clean things up, do whatever you can to make them go away. But if there’s still garbage nearby, the rats aren’t going anywhere for long. They may disappear for a little while, but they’ll be back.

That’s because the rats aren’t the real issue. The garbage is.

The Garbage

A lot of what we struggle with works the same way. The anger, the anxiety, the habits we wish we could break, the tension in our relationships—those are the things we notice first because they’re visible. They’re what interrupt our day and demand our attention. But many times, those things are being fed by something deeper that we haven’t really dealt with yet.

We spend so much time trying to manage what’s on the surface that we don’t always stop long enough to ask what’s underneath it.

That’s why things can feel like a cycle.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

What’s going on in your heart has a way of working its way into every part of your life—your reactions, your thoughts, your decisions, even the patterns you keep finding yourself in.

The good news is that God isn’t put off by any of it. He isn’t waiting for you to figure it out or clean it up before you come to Him.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” — Ephesians 2:10

Even in a season that feels messy or unclear, your purpose hasn’t changed.

“But you are a chosen people… God’s special possession…” — 1 Peter 2:9

You haven’t been overlooked or set aside.

And no matter how far you feel from where you want to be, this is still true:

“For God so loved the world…” — John 3:16

His love doesn’t shift based on how well you’re doing or how stuck you feel.

When life feels heavy, and you start to realize there may be more going on beneath the surface, you don’t have to ignore that or push it aside. You can bring it to God honestly.

Psalm 51 is a reminder that He doesn’t turn away a heart that’s willing to be real with Him. He restores what’s been broken and begins healing from the inside out.

When You’re Ready for Something Different

It may not be about trying harder or fixing one more outward behavior. It may be about letting God gently show you what’s underneath and trusting Him to meet you there.

That’s where real freedom begins—not just managing what shows up on the surface, but allowing God to do a deeper work that actually lasts. If you’re ready to start getting at the heart of it, we have some resources here at Katie Hauck ministries that can help.

You Are Not Too Far Gone. Jesus is Ready.

Maybe you’ve heard about Jesus your whole life. On the other hand, maybe this is the first time you’re wondering what it means to truly be saved. Either way, I believe you’re here for a reason.

God loves you. Yes, you. Right where you are. He hasn’t given up on you no matter what you’ve done or how broken your story feels. He’s been pursuing your heart from the very beginning.

The Bible says:

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
— Romans 10:9

This isn’t about religion. It’s not about having all the answers or fixing yourself first. It’s about relationship. It’s about knowing Jesus personally, and trusting Him to do what only He can: rescue, forgive, and restore.

What Does Salvation Mean?

Salvation rescues you from the power of sin and death. It means forgiveness. You are made new, and brought into a right relationship with God. It’s not something you can earn — it’s a gift. A gift Jesus made possible when He died on the cross and rose again, conquering death and offering eternal life to all who believe.

A Simple Prayer to Begin

You don’t need fancy words. Just a surrendered heart. If you’re ready to take that step, you can pray something like this:

Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I know I can’t fix my life on my own. I’m asking You to forgive me, change me, and lead me. I give You my life today. Thank You for saving me. Amen.

If you just prayed that — welcome to the family. Heaven is celebrating with you (Luke 15:7), and we are too.

The Bible is filled with broken people—liars, cowards, murderers, and failures. And yet, God never gave up on a single one. From Noah to Rahab, David to the shepherds in the field, God had a plan from the beginning: not to save us because we’re good—but because He is good.

In this powerful message, you’ll hear how Jesus came for the overlooked, the messy, and the ones who thought they were too far gone. And He came for you, too.

So maybe you’re feeling worn out this season. Maybe shame whispers that you’re too broken, too far gone, or too much of a mess. But the truth is this: before you took your first breath, God chose you (Ephesians 1:4–5). He wrapped Himself in humble cloth, not robes of royalty, to show you that no one is left out of His love—including you.

Let this be the Christmas season where you kick off your mat, leave your mess behind, and go tell the world: Jesus came, and He came for me.

You are loved.

You are chosen.

You are not too broken for God.

The beginning of a new year often comes with a lot of noise. New goals. New habits. New plans. New promises to “do better this time.”

But for many people—especially those walking through recovery or healing—January doesn’t feel exciting. It feels heavy. We carry the weight of what didn’t change last year, what we’re still wrestling with, and the quiet fear that starting over might just lead to more disappointment.

The good news is this: starting over with God is not about willpower or perfection. It’s about grace. Scripture reminds us again and again that renewal doesn’t come from trying harder—it comes from surrendering our hearts to the One who makes all things new.

Here are five Bible verses to anchor your heart as this new year begins.

1. A New Creation, Not a Better Version

2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

The world tells us the new year is about self-improvement. God tells us it’s about transformation. This verse doesn’t promise a slightly upgraded life—it promises something entirely new. In recovery, this truth matters deeply. You are not defined by your past, your relapse, or your worst season. In Christ, you are being made new and you are loved.

2. Mercy That Meets You Every Morning

Lamentations 3:22–23
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

God doesn’t wait until January 1st to offer mercy. He offers it daily. If last year was marked by struggle, setbacks, or survival mode, this verse is a reminder that you didn’t miss your chance. God’s compassion is fresh today—right where you are.

3. A Clean Heart Comes from God, Not Effort

Psalm 51:10
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Recovery often reveals how deeply we need God to do heart work we cannot do ourselves. This prayer isn’t about managing behavior—it’s about inviting God to restore us from the inside out. As a new year begins, this verse gives language to a surrendered heart asking God to rebuild what feels broken.

4. Letting Go Without Being Defined by the Past

Isaiah 43:18–19
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”

Letting go doesn’t mean pretending the past didn’t happen. It means trusting God is not finished writing your story. Recovery teaches us that healing includes moving forward without dragging shame along with us. God is already at work—sometimes quietly—doing something new.

5. Surrendered Plans, Not Controlled Outcomes

Proverbs 16:3
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”

The new year often comes with planners, schedules, and resolutions. Structure can be helpful, but only when it’s rooted in surrender. This verse reminds us that peace comes not from controlling outcomes, but from placing our plans in God’s hands and letting Him guide each step.

A Different Way to Start the New Year

Starting over with God doesn’t require a perfect plan or a strong resolve. It begins with humility, honesty, and trust. Whether you’re early in recovery, walking through healing, or simply weary from trying to hold everything together, this new year doesn’t ask you to become someone else.

If you’re looking for Scripture to guide your heart this January, let these verses remind you that new beginnings are not earned—they are given.

Denial is one of the most dangerous places to live, especially in recovery. It often sounds harmless — I’m fine. I’ve got this. I don’t need help. But denial keeps us stuck, pretending instead of healing.

In Scripture, we see this clearly. King David lived in personal denial until God sent Nathan to speak truth. The church of Laodicea lived in collective denial, convinced they were spiritually strong when Jesus said they were blind. Different situations, same problem. In both cases, truth was the turning point.

God doesn’t confront us to shame us. He confronts what He intends to restore. Sometimes the most loving thing God can do is hold up a mirror and help us see what we’ve been avoiding.

I know this personally. There was a season in my life when I kept saying I’m fine while everything was falling apart. I believed I could fix what I had no power to control. When denial finally broke, it was painful — but it was also the beginning of freedom. Healing couldn’t begin until honesty did.

That’s why Step One matters. You can’t move forward until you admit you’re powerless. Denial says, I’m okay. Truth says, You’re not — but you can be.

When denial breaks, freedom begins. We don’t just see our sin more clearly — we begin to see ourselves the way God sees us: forgiven, loved, and worth healing.

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

If you’ve spent any time around recovery communities—especially Celebrate Recovery—you’ve probably seen the phrase “God Is Dope” on shirts, hats, and posters. The first time you hear it, you might smile or be confused. It’s not a phrase you expect to see next to a Bible or in a church hallway. But that’s kind of the point.

People in recovery know exactly what dope once meant. It was the substance. The thrill. The escape. It was the thing that was chased when everything else felt too heavy to carry. But that high always came with a crash. It stole peace, relationships, and sometimes hope.

So when someone who’s experienced God’s rescue says, “God Is Dope,” what they’re really saying is:

“God is greater than anything I used to turn to. He’s better. He’s stronger. He’s enough.”

The thing that once controlled me doesn’t anymore. God does and that’s a good thing.

In the You Are Loved series, we often talk about how recovery isn’t just about stopping a habit, but it’s about discovering Who truly satisfies your soul. Healing doesn’t start with sheer willpower. It starts with a Savior. God isn’t a consolation prize after the world lets us down. He is the source, the One who fills us with hope and joy that we don’t have to regret later. When God steps into the story, hearts change, minds transform, and what once defined us loses its power.

That’s what makes the phrase “God Is Dope” so real for those in recovery. It flips the narrative.
The very word that once represented bondage now becomes a testimony of freedom. I’ve heard people in CR say things like:

“I used to think that substance was everything… but now I know God is.”
“The high I was chasing can’t compare to the peace He gives me.”

That’s why this phrase resonates. It’s a celebration of the transformation Jesus brings.

What Scripture Says About God’s Goodness

The Bible has been saying this truth long before it made its way to T-shirts:

“Taste and see that the Lord is good…” — Psalm 34:8

We don’t just hear about God’s goodness — we experience it.

“ I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10

Jesus didn’t rescue us to leave us barely surviving. He gives us life that is full.

“The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

We’re not who we were. And we don’t have to live like we’re still stuck there.

One of my favorite things about this phrase is that it invites questions. When someone asks, “Why does your shirt say that?” you get to share the best part of your story: “Because God changed my life.” God doesn’t waste a single thing He rescues us from. Not even our words.

Wear It. Live It. Share It.

So yes — God Is Dope.
Not because it’s trendy. But because He’s powerful, loving, and deeply invested in our freedom.

If this phrase speaks to your recovery story, don’t be afraid to wear it. Let it start conversations. Let it be a reminder of what’s true on the hardest days.

In this powerful episode of You Are Loved, Mandi shares her courageous journey from addiction and despair to lasting freedom in Christ. Her story is one of defeating shame—rising from the weight of guilt, trauma, and hopelessness to discover her true identity in Jesus. After years of battling mental-health struggles, self-harm, and meth addiction, she found herself homeless, abused, and separated from her children—convinced she was beyond redemption. But everything changed when she encountered the unconditional love of Jesus through True Purpose Ministries and Celebrate Recovery. What once seemed like the end of her story became the beginning of her transformation.

“Two years ago, I was cussing God out and planning my next suicide attempt. Today, I’m clean, alive, and filled with hope.”

Mandi’s testimony is not just a story of survival—it’s a story of defeating shame through grace. She tells how Jesus became her Lord, Savior, and best friend, restored her relationship with her family, and gave her a life she never imagined possible.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Where is God in my pain?” or doubted that you could be forgiven, Mandi’s story will remind you that no one is too far gone for the love of Jesus.
