From Religious Routine to Real Redemption: Charles’ Story

Growing up in church doesn’t always mean you know God personally. That might sound strange to some, but if you’ve ever gone through the motions—Sunday after Sunday, youth group, Bible camp, even Christian school—you might understand the difference between religious routine and real relationship.

This week in the You Are Loved series, I had the opportunity to sit down with Charles, a man whose story has stuck with me. Charles grew up in a strong Christian home, attended a Christian college, and even served in churches throughout his adult life. From the outside, everything looked “right.” But inside, he was struggling deeply with anxiety, depression, identity confusion, and the painful belief that God didn’t truly love him.

He shared how the religious routine of his life never touched the brokenness buried deep in his heart. Despite hearing the gospel thousands of times, Charles never believed it was meant for him. It wasn’t until a devastating series of events—including a failed marriage and the loss of a friend—that he found himself seeking help through biblical counseling.

And that’s when the real transformation began.

Through years of patient, grace-filled counseling, Charles finally brought his lifelong secret into the light. It was in those quiet, difficult moments—sharing his heart week after week with a counselor who refused to give up—that he started to believe the truth: that Jesus loved him personally. That he was known, seen, and not disqualified from grace.

Now, Charles is living proof that it’s never too late to move from religious routine to real redemption. Today, he’s writing books, leading a ministry called Gramazin, and helping others tell their testimonies. He even spends time in prison ministry, where he says he’s witnessed some of the most authentic worship he’s ever experienced.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re just going through the motions—sitting in church, singing the songs, reading your Bible, but still wondering if you’re truly loved—Charles’ story is for you.

It’s a reminder that God isn’t looking for perfect church attendance or polished lives. He wants our hearts. He wants us.
