From Prison to Pastor: Roy McGee’s Story of Redemption
What does it look like when God takes someone from prison to pastor? For Pastor Roy McGee, it looked like a prison cell—and a prayer. Today, Roy leads Fountain of Hope, a faith-based recovery ministry in Tennessee, but his story began in chaos, addiction, and hopelessness.
Roy’s childhood was marked by instability, substance abuse, and a fractured understanding of family. Searching for belonging, he turned to the streets, gangs, and drugs—believing that if he couldn’t find love, he could at least find purpose in being needed. But after years of running, three prison sentences, and a desperate cry to God, everything changed.
In that jail cell, Roy prayed, “God, if You’re real, show me.” That prayer sparked a radical transformation. He was soon accepted into a Christian addiction recovery program, where he encountered a kind of love he had never known. People welcomed him, hugged him, and told him they were glad he was there. At first, he didn’t believe it. But it was real—and it was the love of Jesus.

It wasn’t an easy road. Roy still faced consequences, including a court case that could have sent him away for 20 years. But God intervened. Charges were dropped, doors were opened, and Roy walked out a free man with a purpose.
Now, Roy and his wife lead Fountain of Hope, currently housing 40 men, with plans to expand to 80. His message is clear: “God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called.” His Christian testimony is a reminder that no one is too far gone.
If God could redeem Roy’s life, He can do the same for you. This isn’t just a recovery story—it’s a faith-based recovery story of redemption, purpose, and hope.
