Give God BACK Control of Your Life

Let me start by saying this: giving your life to Jesus is the most important decision you will ever make. It’s the beginning of a new story, a new identity, and a new future. But there’s a second step that a lot of us miss—giving Him our will.

That’s what I want to talk about today.

In Lesson 5 of the Celebrate Recovery curriculum, we focus on Principle 3: Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ’s care and control.

Most of us understand what it means to give our lives to Jesus. That’s salvation. That’s eternity secured. That’s the moment you step out of darkness and into the light. But giving Him your will? That’s something entirely different.

Your will is your choices. Your actions. Your daily decisions. It’s what you do with your time, your attitude, your thoughts. And while your life belongs to Jesus the moment you say yes to Him, surrendering your will is how you begin to walk in abundant life—not just eternal life.

God created us in His image. He’s triune, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we’re triune too. We are spirit, soul, and body. When you’re saved, your spirit is sealed by the Holy Spirit. But your soul—your mind, your will, and your emotions—is where the battle takes place.

Galatians 5 reminds us that the Spirit and the flesh are in conflict. That means every day, we have a choice. Will we align our thoughts, feelings, and desires with our flesh… or with our spirit?

That’s where surrender comes in.

Giving God your will means renewing your mind through His Word. Romans 12:2 tells us not to conform to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. When you do that, you begin to think differently. You begin to walk differently. And before you even realize it, you start to bear fruit—the kind that only comes from the Holy Spirit.

Things like peace, patience, kindness, joy. Not because you’re trying harder. Not because you’re striving. But because you’re staying rooted in the Word, and that root produces fruit.

One of my favorite images is that of a fruit tree. That tree isn’t straining to produce apples. It just stays rooted and fed, and fruit grows naturally. The same is true for you. Stop trying so hard to change on your own. Instead, get rooted in the Word. Get fed by truth. Let God do the growing in you.

And here’s the part that blesses me most. Jesus says the meek will inherit the earth. Not just heaven—the earth. When we live surrendered, we experience joy, freedom, and purpose right now. That’s what it means to walk in abundance. That’s the reward of handing over your will.

So today, I want to ask you something personal.

Have you given God your will?
Are you still trying to control everything, or are you letting the Holy Spirit lead?

If you’ve never made the decision to give Jesus your life, start there. But if you have, and you’re ready for more—if you’re tired of doing it all your way—I invite you to take the next step.

Pray. Surrender. And let Him lead.

He loves you. He has good plans for you. And His way is always better.

Blessings,
Katie
